The New York Times announced that Richard Wooldridge, president and COO of The International Herald Tribune (IHT), will assume the business leadership of the IHT effective immediately. Wooldridge reports to Janet L. Robinson, senior vice president of newspaper operations for The New York Times Company and president and general manager of The New York Times newspaper. The New York Times Company, which had owned an interest in the IHT since 1967, recently acquired The Washington Post Company's fifty-percent interest. As a result, several organizational changes have been made. The position of chairman and chief executive officer will no longer exist, and Peter Goldmark, who currently holds these positions, is leaving the paper. Last month, Walter Wells was named managing editor, reporting to Howell Raines, executive editor of The New York Times.
