Games and entertainment Web publisher IGN Entertainment, previously IGN/GameSpy, Tuesday announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Rotten Tomatoes, a destination site for casual and hardcore movie and DVD buyers. The acquisition enhances the company's offerings to its target 18 to 34-year-old demographic audience, adding another vertical property for advertisers.

Rotten Tomatoes will be IGN Entertainment's third acquisition in the past 12 months, following the company's acquisitions of GameSpy Industries and TeamXbox. The transaction broadens IGN's coverage of the movie and DVD markets, which are similar in demographic and spending habits to the video and PC games markets reached by its other sites.

Rotten Tomatoes' addition to IGN Entertainment's portfolio increases the size of the demographic audience the company already offers advertisers. According to comScore Media Metrix,Ô Rotten Tomatoes reached a worldwide audience of 5.2 million in May, 2004, and, when combined with other IGN properties, it would have reached an unduplicated audience of 22.9 million in that same month.
