Bo Sandkvist says that you should make sure that the template isn't so ubiquitous that the site is indistinguishable from competitors'. "Your Website will not appear unique at all and your reputation as a solid, different Website will be tarnished," he writes.

On the other hand, you don't want to spend too much time and energy tweaking the template--since that's why you invested in one in the first place. It's about finding the appropriate balance between making necessary changes to stand out, Sandkvist says--like finding images that resonate with your niche, or using a particular font or color scheme--without expending too much effort or redesigning the entire template.
