ABC Opens Envelope Online: Oscar Nods To Stream Live

For the first time, ABC-operated Oscar.com is expected to stream live next week when the nominations for the Academy Awards are announced. The event takes place at 8:30 a.m. EST on Tuesday.

ABC also plans to archive the event on Oscar.com, in part because it takes place so early on the West Coast.

Academy president Sid Ganis will be one of the presenters at the event, and will be joined by a co-host the Academy has not yet named. Before the ceremony, Oscar.com--the annual Web site for the awards--will be up and running with multiple new features.

A year ago, the site was chock full of video, including a regular "Road to the Oscars" preview show leading up to the presentation--and a new "Thank You Cam" available after the show, where winners offered their exuberant thoughts. In that vein, ABC looked to prompt people to continue to visit the site after the awards. (Last year's version is still accessible.)

The site is ad-supported, although apparently sold separately from the on-air spots during the Oscars telecast on ABC. Last year, Procter & Gamble ran banner ads for its Olay Regenerist brand on the site, although it passed on the ceremony.

Oscar.com--the official site of the Academy Awards--is created and run by the Disney-ABC TV Group's digital media team. The 80th annual Awards are scheduled for Feb. 24, although the writers' strike could affect whether they take place.
