Why Google Wants Microhoo To Happen

Tech blogger Robert Scoble says that everyone has missed the key points about how a Microsoft-Yahoo merger would affect Google. Far from being afraid of a Microhoo, Google would welcome this merger with open arms. Indeed, Google's recent claim that the merger is "troubling" is just delaying tactics, as "every month longer that this deal takes is tens of millions in Google's pockets."

Scoble says the real race here is for ownership of the mobile phone, an area that all three companies are moving into aggressively. But what happens to Microsoft and Yahoo's mobile efforts while they're stuck in a courtroom for six months? They take a back seat. Google will close mobile phone deal after mobile phone deal.

As for search, Microsoft and Yahoo could gain ground if they do a very excellent job of combining the 600 million people who use their email services and getting them stay there and search. However, this is a big task, given Google's enormous search lead. It's also going to take a lot of time for Microhoo to integrate search and email, giving Google plenty of time to gain Gmail market share-and perhaps, expand its email partnership with AOL.
