Can Hits Save Video Game Industry?

Conventional wisdom says that consumers will continue to spend on entertainment even in a recession, and many in the video game business are hoping that proves true. But in case conventional wisdom isn't enough, video game makers are pinning their hopes on a handful of expected blockbusters to carry them through the holiday season.

It's not too far-fetched a theory give the parade of hits 2008 has seen so far. Grand Theft Auto IV, Guitar Hero, and the latest World of Warcraft release have all been monster hits this year, and will likely continue to sell big through the holiday season. And game consoles are continuing to show strength as well.

But no one is relying on popularity alone to get them through: Microsoft is offering steep discounts on its Xbox console, whole Nintendo is stepping up production on its Wii consoles to make sure those who want them can find them over the next few weeks.
