  • Gap Posts Stronger Profits, Weaker Sales

    Although its ongoing sales difficulties worsened, Gap Inc. says its net earnings from continuing operations jumped 40% in the first quarter, to $249 million. First-quarter net sales fell to $3.38 billion, compared with $3.55 billion for the first quarter of last year. On a comparable-store basis, sales sank 11%, compared with a decrease of 4% in the first quarter of the prior year. "We are pleased with our first-quarter results, as we delivered solid earnings growth in a difficult environment," the company says.     Edmunds.com on Friday released its first list of vehicles rated by consumers. The Edmunds.com Consumers' Top Rated Vehicle Awards rank cars and trucks categorically (based on consumer votes) by performance, comfort, fuel economy, fun to drive, interior design, exterior design, build quality and reliability. Results were based on a year's worth of submissions by vehicle owners on Edmunds.com vehicle-rating pages. The firm says that among manufacturers, consumers gave Audi the most awards--for the TT coupe and convertible, A5, and A6--while Toyota, Lexus and Chevrolet tied for second place, each won two awards.     Avon Products, Inc. has signed a licensing arrangement with James Bond entertainment franchise, property of Danjaq LLC and Eon Productions, to create a new women's fragrance line called "Bond Girl 007." British actress Gemma Arterton, who plays the role of Agent Fields in the upcoming Bond film, will be the face of the new fragrance.
