Calacanis: Social Network Advertising Will Never Work

That’s right, Jason Calacanis, Founder and CEO, Mahalo, thinks the great social media advertising race is all for naught.

In fact, he thinks social networks are, “the worst medium for advertising. It is never going to work. It hasn’t worked for chat rooms. It doesn’t work for message boards. It doesn’t work for AIM.”

What does work? Naturally search does, but speaking during an OMMA Global keynote this afternoon in Hollywood, Calacanis predicted it’s going to work even better.

Calling search the “greatest advertising vehicle created in the history of mankind, in my opinion. It’s just getting started. And it’s only going to get better.”

Why don’t social networks work as ad media?

Because, Calacanis believes they are “essentially parties. And parties are the time in which you are least receptive to advertising. People don’t want marketing messages in social networks. Just like people don’t want marketing messages when they are having dinner parties.”
