Salon Offers Bigger Ads, or No Ads at All

  • March 20, 2001
Salon.com, an Internet media company that produces 10 original content sites, now offers the new, larger, advertising units on its network. The new, larger ad formats, introduced by CNet, are rich-media-compatible. The first of the new units to be implemented will be the "Messaging Plus" unit - a large, 336 x 280 rectangle format. Intel and Lexus will be the first to use the new ad formats on the Salon network. Early indications are that the new ads seem to be making an impact. According to recent research by EyeTracking.com, users spend more time with the ads, and brand recall was as much as three times higher than with conventional banners.

In another announcement, Salon revealed plans for a paid subscription service – “Salon Premium” - that will provide Salon users with an "ad-free" version of Salon, along with exclusive new content features. After its debut, Salon Premium will continue to be enhanced with new features, including additional content and a new download feature enabling users to read Salon when not connected to the Internet.
