Cablevision Deal Brings Live Yankee Games to the Internet

  • Reuters, Thursday, June 25, 2009 9:45 AM

Cablevision, Major League Baseball and the New York Yankees cable network have reached a multiyear deal for live streaming of online Yankees games in the team's home market. Cablevision Internet customers who receive the Yankees' YES Network will be able to buy a package to see the games live on the Internet starting July 8.

It will cost fans a one-time fee of $49.95 for the remainder of the season or $19.95 for any 30-day period. A price for a full season for next year has not been set.

Up to now baseball fans have not been able to watch the games of teams in their home markets live online. At MLB.com they can only watch live games of teams outside their home market. Even with that restriction, MLB says it has delivered more than 250 million live video streams since it launched the service in 2003.

That's great, but I think it hardly makes up for all the other sins of the Dolan family and Cablevision. I have many doubts that this will be the deal this article seems to suggest. Just look at what the Dolans and Cblvsn have done with MSG--using their monopoly on the place, they've shut out other providers from broadcasting HD on demand so that they can broaden their monopoly. Of course, for the rest of us this just means it costs more and the quality and customer service are worse.

Isn't NY tired of getting their arms twisted by the Dolan crooks time and time again. I say support the other providers, who are cheaper and provide better service anyway.
