Hewlett Packard is partnering with green social network Greenwala to sponsor a contest "Choose to reuse" which will benefit ACTERRA, a nonprofit that brings people together to create local solutions for a healthy planet.
Consumers can visit the contest page at Greenwala and submit a photo of the most creative or innovative reuse of something that would otherwise be trashed. The most popular entry will win an Energy Star-qualified HP Mini 110 XP Notebook and a Deskjet D2660 printer.
In conjunction with the contest, HP is making a $500 donation to ACTERRA. ACTERRA was formed in 2000 by the merger of two of Northern California's environmental organizations: the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation (founded in 1970) and Bay Area Action (formed in 1990).
"At HP we believe that reuse is the best strategy to reduce our environmental impact," says Christian Florensa, HP Environmental Sustainability. "However, at some
point products reach their end of life, and it is then that recycling is a key next step. At HP we have been recycling for more than 20 years, and we have learned that products need to be designed
with recycling in mind."--Tanya Irwin
