'Consumer Reports' Tests 3D TV, Calls It 'Compelling'

Consumer Reports rated 3D TVs for the first time -- but it couldn't decided whether the new technology was a fad or here for the long term.
"It remains to be seen whether 3D TV is just a novelty or a new product category in the consumer electronics space," stated Paul Reynolds, electronics editor for Consumer Reports. But he added: "We can tell you 3D TV is the real deal: realistic, compelling and exciting."
The consumer product analysis publication rated 14 models and generally found those with plasma technology better than TVs with LCD technology -- in all measures of 3D technology -- black levels, brightness, ghosting and viewing angles.
But glasses are needed -- as well as a piece of separate equipment from a Sony brand -- which could be the causes of possible eyestrain and headaches. Future long-term effects will be revealed from ongoing studies.
Right now, apart from some major TV sports events from ESPN and DirecTV, 3D TV programming is limited. Still, it advises those early adopters they may want to take the plunge and buy -- especially if and when more programming becomes available.
Of those tested, Consumer Reports said Panasonic plasma TVs rated well. They had the least ghosting of any of the 3D TVs the magazine tested. This was followed by plasma TVs from LG and Samsung, which had slightly more ghosting.
