Horrow Goes Beyond the '$coreboard'

Beyond the $coreboardThe three-decade-old "Nightly Business Report" on PBS is moving into a new game, adding a weekly sports segment Nov. 8. Sports law expert Rick Horrow will deliver the "Beyond the $coreboard" feature that explores the massive sports industry's role in the economy.

In a sense, it's a lesser initiative than what correspondent Darren Rovell delivers on-air and on-blog for CNBC. Horrow's commentary will also have a presence on the NBR Web offering. ESPN has largely ceded the sports-business ground to competitors.

A visiting professor of sports law at Harvard, Horrow is co-author of "Beyond the Box Score: An Insider's Guide to the $750 Billion Business of Sports." He has contributed to the PBS business show for years.

"The programming will look at sports through the "Nightly Business Report" business lens and study how sports business impacts our lives, from the places we live to the products we buy," stated Mykalai Kontilai, chairman and chief executive of NBR Worldwide. "The highlights we cover on 'Beyond the $coreboard' happen in the boardroom, not on the playing field."

NBR is sponsored, in part, by Franklin Templeton Investments and has had national reach since 1981.

Horrow plans a re-release this fall on a book that could receive greater interest with LeBron James, a global endorsement basketball player who recently joined the Miami Heat. The book is entitled "When the Game Is on the Line: From the Man Who Brought the Heat to Miami and the Browns Back to Cleveland, an Inside Look at the High-Stakes World of Sports Deal-Making."
