Small Business: Facebook, Twitter Don't Cut It

  • November 8, 2010
A new Web site traffic survey by software firm Intellimon and the University of Bradford found that while 67% of the 4,000 or so respondents -- small business owners -- use social media platform Facebook to promote their business, an average of only 29% find the platform effective in any way for driving traffic to their business Web site.

Only 27.2% of respondents said they found Twitter effective for generating Web site traffic to their business Web site. And 62% of people doing business online were 50 years of age or older, while the youngest age group (18-43 years of age) reported the highest success rate with their traffic marketing.

Despite "Search Engine Traffic" being reported as the most important traffic generation tactic, 62.8% of respondents perform SEO only monthly or less frequently.

The survey respondents said training was crucial to the success of their online business.
