HSN Unveils Android Platform, Verizon Pucks NHL

HSN

HSN, the rebranded Home Shopping Network, is diving into the mobile commerce arena with a new shopping platform, developed by Motricity, for customers using Spring ID-enabled Android phones, including the LG Optimus S, Sanyo Zio, and Samsung Transform.

The new platform, HSN ID, offers users instant personalization with apps and content tailored to their interests. But (no surprise) the main focus of HSN ID is browsing and shopping for HSN products.

The platform's features include "Today's Special," showing the best value of the day; live video feed of HSN TV programming; a list showing the last 15 items featured on the TV program; a list of new arrivals; and social media tie-ins including HSN Facebook updates via the mobile device.

John McDevitt, vice president of advanced services for HSN, called the partnership "the latest development in our efforts to remain at the forefront of transactional innovation."

Sprint currently offers a handful of free "ID"-branded platforms combining mobile apps and content, including MTV Music ID, ESPN, Socially Connected and Fashion and Beauty. Users can download HSN ID alongside these other packages and switch back and forth between the ID platforms.

Also this week, Verizon Wireless unveiled a new app targeting National Hockey League fans with access to information about games, scores and players, as well as video highlights from league play.

The new app, NHL GameCenter Live, is available in three payment tiers: a free, basic version which delivers live scores, in-game stats, and access to the official NHL Twitter feed; a version costing $9.99 also gives access to condensed game recaps, live audio and video highlights; and the most expensive version (costing $39.99) also allows fans to watch up to 40 games per week out of market.
