Buzzmedia Gets Frisky, Enlarges Gossip Pool

Expanding its network of niche gossip and entertainment sites -- and ad partners' ability to target young women -- Buzzmedia has acquired The Frisky from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Launched in 2008 and focused on entertainment news, celebrity, fashion and women's lifestyle, The Frisky is recognized for targeting female audiences with humor and an "authentic" voice.

"The Frisky has a trusted voice," said Doug Rohrer, Chief Revenue Officer at Buzzmedia. "Its users chase the intelligence, maturity and humor of its content."

Currently, The Frisky boasts an average of 2 million readers a month.

Buzzmedia currently oversees over 40 niche content sites, including Celebuzz, Just Jared, TheSuperficial, What Would Tyler Durden Do, Socialite Life and GoFugYourself.

All told, Buzzmedia claims to reach more than 75 million monthly readers worldwide. Prior to the acquisition, Buzzmedia's entertainment news division was ranked as the fourth-largest online, just behind Yahoo's OMG!, Time Warner's TMZ and People.

Separately, Turner is also focusing on digital properties that tie more closely to news, entertainment and sports. One of Turner's key digital investments is FreeWheel, whose Monetization Rights Management platform helps content owners and distributors sell ad inventory online.

Also of note, acquisitions are not Buzzmedia's only strategy for growth. Last summer, the company struck a marketing deal with Oh No They Didn't!(ONTD!), the most popular community on LiveJournal. Through the partnership, ONTD has been able to offer readers more sharing tools and additional content.
