Pepsi Rolls Out 'Social' Vending Machines

PepsiCo is readying to roll out an interactive vending machine with a touchscreen that lets users send beverage gifts by selecting a beverage, entering the recipient's name, mobile phone number and a personalized text message (with optional short video recorded at the machine). The recipient gets a system code and directions on how to redeem it on similar vending machines.

The prototype of the "Social Vending System" debuted this week at the National Automatic Merchandising Association show in Chicago. PepsiCo plans to test the machines with key partners later this year.

Archrival Coca-Cola Co. began testing its Freestyle vending machine, which dispenses more than 100 flavor combinations, in 2009 and has been actively rolling it out.
