'Can You Drive A Stick?' Asks ...
Jul 27, 2011, 3:45 PM
A car company is going to launch a campaign this week. This campaign is about something that fewer and fewer car shoppers want or even know how to use. And it's low tech. And it's macho. No, it ain't the ashtray. It's manual transmission. Six on the floor, baby. Forget UFC or ultimate Frisbee. Forget frogmen or Nathan's Famous hot dog-eating championships; the real test of testosterone? Can you drive a stick?
In a world where machismo is disappearing faster than straight razors, it's becoming the rare throwback who can engine brake, or start from zero on 45-degree grade with a professional kickboxer in a Bentley two inches to the rear. Can you guess which automaker would actually devote a campaign to the virtues of manual transmission? Email me(I'm just curious who can guess this) and learn the truth tomorrow.--Karl Greenberg
