Univision Adds Sports Programming Execs

In advance of its all-sports network, Univision has added a pair of executives for its sports programming -- one from the New York Jets and the other from a joint venture involving ESPN.

Victoria Vitarelli joins from the Jets as vice president of marketing of Univision Deportes, while Sharon van Zwieten becomes senior executive producer in sports news, coming from ESPN Star Sports, which operates sports networks throughout Asia with tailored versions of "SportsCenter."

Alexander "Sandy" Brown, sports chief at Univision, logged time at ESPN Star Sports. Both executives will report to him.

The coming Univision Deportes network will be modeled, in part, on the Televisa Deportes Network, the Latin American channel launched two years ago.

Vitarelli, who will be based in New York, was senior director of marketing for the Jets and previously was at MasterCard in a Hispanic-marketing role.

Van Zwieten, based in Miami, will lead Univision's sports news programming that will surely include a "SportsCenter"-type nightly show when Univision Deportes launches. At ESPN Star Sports, she launched "SportsCenter Malaysia." Previously, she was a top producer at Aaron Brown's show on CNN.

Van Zwieten will be competing against her old company with its ESPN Deportes network stateside.

Univision holds rights to soccer games in the MLS and Mexican League and to some tournaments in the Americas. Some games will probably move to the cable network.

The company also has the 2014 World Cup, where some less appealing games could be shown.
