'Pam Am' Still Flying, 'Makeover' Sees Uptick

Pan-Am-AA

The second Sunday of the new season offered up the same winner -- NBC's "Sunday Night Football" -- with mostly lower overall ratings versus the first week for everyone else.

ABC's new "Pan Am" at 10 p.m. slipped about 20% from its debut week -- down to a still decent Nielsen preliminary 2.5 rating/6 share among 18-49 viewers. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" also went south -- but about half of the decline of "Pan Am," around 10% to a 2.9/7 at 9 p.m. The good news: "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was up around 10% to a 2.1/5.

That meant ABC stayed about the same week-to-week -- a 2.3/6 off from a 2.4/6 -- and still in fourth place overall for the night.

NBC was also the same week-to-week -- a Nielsen preliminary 5.9/15. Still, its "Sunday Night Football" game -- the New York Jets-Baltimore Ravens -- was down versus the fourth "SNF" game a year ago, around 10%.

CBS moved up week-to-week, landing in second place to NBC (although almost three full 18-49 rating points behind).

Most of this was due to Andy Rooney's departure from "60 Minutes" -- with the show well above its average to a 3.3/8. Its other Sunday night shows -- "Amazing Race" and "The Good Wife" -- were a little bit better off, helped from its NFL programming overrun earlier in the afternoon/evening. CBS averaged a 3.1/8 versus a 2.5/6 a week ago.

Fox didn't get the boost from its late-afternoon NFL programming that it did a week ago. That pushed its animated comedies down to a 2.7/7 from a 4.4/11 a week ago.

"The Simpsons" dropped more than 20% to a 3.0/8; "The Cleveland Show" sank 16% to a 2.6/6: "Family Guy" slipped 15% to a 3.5/8; and "American Dad" was down 10% to a 2.7/6.

Univision was the same week to week, a 1.3/3.

Young viewers seem to disappear for broadcasters this Sunday. NBC still led with 18-34 viewers, at 5.2/14 against a 5.3/15 the week before. But Fox, usually a strong player on the night, sank to a 3.0/9 from a 4.9/14 the week before, good for second place. Other networks continued to post under two rating points for this viewer group: CBS at a 1.9/5; ABC at a 1.7/5; and Univision, at a 1.2/3.
