The controversy over the Chevy Volt is being fueled by GOP operatives like California Congressman Darrell Issa. While GM says it plans to strengthen the battery pack and make it even less likely a fire could follow a collision, with a fix expected within weeks the GOP-controlled House is looking to hold its own public investigation.

A committee hearing has now been scheduled for next month on the Volt fires. Issa has meanwhile asked GM CEO Dan Akerson to disclose when it first discovered a problem with the Volt batteries – and to answer questions about what the lawmaker described as “battery system safety deficiencies.”
