Velti: iPhone 5, iOS 6 Propel App Ad Impressions

Mobile marketing firm Velti on Friday released new data showing most iPhone users have quickly upgraded to the new iOS 6 operating system but a hardcore group of holdouts remain. So far, 11% of users are sticking with iOS 4, with Velti speculating the much-publicized problems with Apple Maps could account for some resistance to iOS 6.

The findings also suggest people are trying out favorite apps on the recently released iPhone 5. New iPhone 5 and iOS 6 users spent 27% of their time on social networking apps, followed by games (22%) and entertainment and utility apps (13% each).

Looking at the bigger picture, iOS in September accounted for 62% of mobile ad impressions on the company's Mobclix Exchange compared to 38% for Google’s Android platform.

“In July and August, Android held prevalent market share in a year that was previously dominated by iOS—but September marks an end to this trend,” said Krishna Subramanian, CMO of Velti, in a statement. “We are seeing a pattern that leads us to believe the shift back to iOS domination is a result of the iOS 6 release and iPhone 5 launch.

Mobclix serves as a trading hub for advertising across 33,500 mobile apps and 45 ad networks.
