Yahoo Phases Out Its BlackBerry App
When Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in September offered employees the smartphone of their choice, BlackBerry wasn’t among the options. Now, Yahoo is dissing the struggling smartphone maker again, phasing out its app for BlackBerry devices as of April 1.
The company announced plans to pull its BlackBerry app in a blog post Friday in which it listed several other properties slated for shutdown including the Yahoo Search App, Yahoo Avatars and the Yahoo Message Boards Web site.
Mayer said during the company’s fourth-quarter conference call that Yahoo planned to reduce its roster of 60 to 75 mobile apps down to 12 to 15 key titles. The step is part of her wider effort to overhaul the Web portal’s offerings and focus on enhancing its mobile products in particular.
To that end, Yahoo has recently overhauled its Yahoo Mail and Flickr apps.
For its part, BlackBerry last month released the first of a new pair of smartphones running its new BlackBerry 10 operating system. But its shrinking market share in the smartphone market continues to cause problems. Last month, Home Depot said it was replacing the BlackBerry devices it provides executives to iPhones.
