Nikon Makes A Game Of Photography

If there’s one thing people love doing on Facebook, it’s sharing photos. Nikon is giving its fans (who are naturally more inclined to share their work) a chance to earn some bragging rights within its online community through a new app and promotion, My Nikon World.

“Today, more than ever, consumers are using images to tell stories and document their lives. My Nikon World showcases these contributions and gives fans a tool to receive feedback on their photography and be inspired to try new subjects and techniques,” Lisa Baxt, associate general manager of communications for Nikon, tells Marketing Daily. “Prior to My Nikon World, fans could only share their submissions to our wall. There was no organization for capturing the types of images shared or the techniques used.”

Through the app, users of Nikon’s Facebook community create online photographer profiles and contribute to online galleries to earn points and badges, based on different photography techniques and subject matter.

“Nikon has always focused on empowering people to capture and share their memorable moments,” Baxt says. “They are sharing their passion with Nikon and their peers and that can create a deep connection.”

My Nikon World will also include contributions from professional photographers (such as fashion photographer Rob Van Petten and documentary photographer and author Steve Simon), who will issue challenges for users to hone their skills while earning points and badges. The more a user participates in the challenges, uploads photos and engage with other photos, the more points and badges they can attain. Already, fans have submitted more than 5,000 images in a week since the promotion began, Baxt says.

“We are so impressed by the quality of images fans are sharing and we hope My Nikon World will serve as a community where people can learn from each other,” she says. “We see this as a great opportunity to learn from our community about how and what they enjoy engaging with and value their input to keep it relevant to their needs.”
