CBS Radio, Beasley Swap Stations

CBS Radio and Beasley Broadcasting have announced plans to swap a number of stations, including some high-profile outfits in major markets on the East Coast. There is no cash involved in the deal, but the stations in question produced well over $100 million a year in revenue, making this one of the larger radio station transactions in recent memory.

Altogether 19 stations will trade hands, with CBS Radio giving up 13 stations in Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, in exchange for five Beasley stations in Florida and Pennsylvania.

The CBS stations include six stations in the Tampa-St. Petersburg market (WLLD-FM, WQYK-FM, WRBQ-FM, WYUU-FM, WHFS-FM, and WHFS-AM); seven stations in the Charlotte, NC market (WBAV-FM, WKQC-FM, WNKS-FM, WPEG-FM, WSOC-FM, WBCN-AM, and WFNZ-AM) and one station in Philadelphia (WIP-AM, a sports radio station).

For its part, Beasley is giving CNBS Radio two station clusters -- WXTU-FM and WRDW-FM in Philadelphia, and WPOW-FM, WKIS-FM, and WQAM-AM in Miami.

In a memo to staff, CBS Radio CEO Dan Mason touted the benefits of the deal, noting that “for the first time we will own radio stations in Miami -- a market where CBS already successfully operates two television stations, WFOR-TV and WBFS-TV,” adding: “We’ve all seen the tremendous value we create by having our local radio and television properties work hand in hand.”

2014 has already seen a number of radio stations changing hands. In May, Clear Channel Radio (now iHeartMedia) revealed plans to acquire 29 radio stations owned by Quantum Communications in small markets across the U.S.

Last year, Cumulus sold or swapped 55 stations in 11 small marketers to Townsquare Media, receiving 10 small market stations in return, along with $160 million cash, in a deal with a total value of $238 million. Cumulus used the proceeds of that sale to help finance its $260 million purchase of Dial Global.
