Instagram Expands Direct Service

Instagram on Tuesday debuted several additions to its Direct service, including threaded messages and the ability to send content from one's feed as a Direct message.

Threaded messages should make it easier for users to go back and forth with the people they connect with most. Rather than creating a new conversation every time they send a photo or video, one’s threads will now be based on the people in them.

Instagram has also added the ability to name one’s groups, a quick camera feature to respond with a selfie on the go and bigger emoji options.

Users are also being given a new way to start conversations around what they see on Instagram. Now, users can expect to find an arrow next to the like and comment icons under every post.

They only need to tap it to send that post to a friend or group as a message using Instagram Direct. It will then appear as part of their conversation. Users can tap the photo or video to see and like the original post.

They can also send hashtag pages and location pages by tapping the arrow icon in the top right-hand corner.

Instagram first launched it Direct in 2013 as a way for users to share moments with a friend or a smaller group of friends.

Presently, about 85 million people use Direct on a monthly basis, according to Instagram.
