How Does Your Salary Compare?

As the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team takes their gender discrimination case to the courts, a new study suggests that women in the email marketing industry are also likely to earn less than their male peers.

Women in the email marketing profession make 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, suggests a new study by email marketing community Only Influencers.

The median salary for male email marketers is $90,000 according to the study, while the median salary for women is just $75,000. Men’s salaries range from $17,250 to $300,000, while women’s range from $28,000-$200,000.

Bill McCloskey, founder of Only Influencers, explained the methodology of the study in a conversation with Email Marketing Daily.

“The median is more accurate than the average, and is closest to the real average because it neutralizes the outliers,” says McCloskey. The email marketing community polled 145 email marketers in the United States, divided equally between male and female respondents.

Although female email marketers still make less than their male peers, McCloskey says the study suggests the email marketing industry pay gap has actually improved in recent years.

“While there is still an obvious discrepancy in salary, that pay gap has narrowed a bit,” he says.

Only Influencers conducted a similar study of email marketing salaries in 2014 that showed the pay gap in the email marketing industry to be over 28%, suggesting that women made just 72 cents to every dollar earned by men. The median salary for a male in 2014 was $100,000 according to the report, while a women’s median salary was $75,000.

A 2014 study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research suggests the national gender wage gap was 21% that year, meaning that women on average made 79 cents for every dollar earned by men.
