Facebook Releases Slideshow On Core App

As users consume more video on their mobile devices, basically every platform is pivoting to include more video options. Companies like Google and Apple have added features like Movies Assistant and Memories that convert static photos into slideshow movies to make for more interesting viewing.

Now Facebook is officially rolling out its photo-to-video product, called Slideshow (not the ad product), on its core app to iOS users worldwide.

Facebook has been pushing its companion app Moments onto users since its release in October. The company recently warned users that their synced photos would be lost if they didn’t download Moments, causing the app to shoot from 60th to 1st place in the App Store.

Slideshows are pre-fabricated for users when they take more than five photos or videos in a 24-hour period. Users can then adjust them, adding or removing photos and selecting a theme.

Themes include: Inspired, Nostalgic, Playful, Night Out, Birthday, Epic, Thankful, Tropical, Bollywood and Amped.

Slideshows originated on the Moments app, but with Snapchat garbling up much of the live content sharing happening among millennials. Facebook is hoping to pull some of that back under its wheelhouse with Slideshow.

It can be difficult to compare the platforms, as Snapchat counts video views as a millisecond, while Facebook’s counts a view as three seconds. But what is apparent is that original content isn’t being generated on the social platform as much as it used to be.

With Slideshow, Facebook is obviously hoping to get users to post more of their own content.
