TV Station Groups Post Strong Stock Hikes

Major TV station groups witnessed sharp rises in their stock prices on Monday.

Sinclair Broadcast Group soared 4.7% to $31.00; Tegna was up 5.4% to $22.38, Tribune Media grew 5.4% to $36.02, Nexstar Broadcasting Group was up 3.2% to $60.50 and Media General inched up 1% to $18.55.

Two other cable network groups also witnessed sharp gains. Discovery Communications was 7.2% higher to $28.35, while Scripps Networks Interactive adding on 7.6% to $73.70 and AMC Network went 3.4% higher to $54.93.

Two pay TV providers went in different directions: Comcast grew 1.3% to $67.31 and Charter was down 3.4% to $263.14.

By comparison, media companies generally outperformed the broader market indices -- Dow Jones was down 0.11% to 18.868, with the S&P 500 losing 0.01% to 2,164; and Nasdaq was off 0.4% to 5,218.

Major pure-play digital media companies lost ground: Facebook was down 3.3% to $115.08, Google, losing 2.4% $753.22; and Netflix, off 1.2% to $113.38. Bucking this trend, Twitter was up 3.2% to $19.14.
