Fugue Names Phillip Merrick As CEO

Phillip Merrick has been named CEO of Fugue, a firm that automates security and compliance in the cloud.

Merrick, who recently left as CEO of SparkPost, will drive strategy and lead the firm’s day-to-day operations. His hire will allow Josh Stella, Fugue’s cofounder-CTO, to “devote 100% of my time to the product,” Stella states.

Fugue helps clients by finding security and compliance violations in the cloud infrastructure and ensuring they are not repeated, the company says. The firm spent the last year building a team.

Merrick, who will also oversee sales and marketing, hopes to educate the market about the technology.

Earlier in his career, Merrick founded and served as CEO of webMethods, taking the company public and growing its revenue to $202 million.

At SparkPost, he transitioned the email service firm to a cloud technology architecture and attained profitability over the past two years. When he left earlier this month, SparkPost said he planned to focus on building early stage companies.

Stella states that “there aren’t too many people qualified to run a rapidly growing software company.”

Founded in 2012, Fugue has raised $75 million in funding. It has about 70 employee in offices in Frederick, Maryland, Washington, DC and San one, California.
