Amazon Marketing Exec Jumps To Wireless Broadband Provider

Amazon marketing executive Rene Villegas has joined Starry, a Boston-based fixed wireless broadband provider, as its first chief marketing officer.

Villegas spent four years at Amazon as the head of marketing, business development and operations for “Subscribe with Amazon” in Seattle.

Before Amazon, Villegas’ experiences include stints at American Express, TrueCar, Viggle and Fox Mobile Group.

Villegas joins Starry at a time of rapid projected growth and as the company prepares to become a public company through a business combination with FirstMark Horizon Acquisition Corp., which was announced on Oct. 7.

His track record of helping to guide high-growth businesses, combined with his experience in performance marketing, brand management and business development make him well suited to lead Starry’s marketing efforts, says Chet Kanojia, Starry co-founder and chief executive officer.

Villegas is charged with helping the company expand and bring #HappyInterneting to more communities across the country, Kanojia adds.

He will lead the company’s growth and field marketing teams across all markets, in addition to leading the company’s creative and branding efforts as a senior member of the management team.

Villegas helped launch "Subscribe with Amazon," a business unit that allowed companies to list their products on the online retailer for the first time and enabled their discovery by Amazon customers.

Starry is currently available in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Denver Columbus and Washington, D.C. and is expanding nationwide.
