Traffic Accident Victims Remembered Via 'Add Place' In Google Maps

Ad agency HeimatTBWA\ has created a campaign that uses the “Add Place” feature in Google Maps to prevent traffic accidents by adding memorials to road accident victims at the exact location where they died. Normally the feature is used to add a business, dining spot or other places of interest.

The effort was timed to World Day of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims (Nov. 19) with the idea that a digital memorial for individual victims on the widely used Google Maps GPS system could potentially saves by reminding drivers to be cautious and alert at certain spots on roadways where fatalities have occurred.

The work was done on behalf of Madrid-based NGO StopAccidentes that was founded by relatives and friends of traffic accident victims and whose goal is to eliminate traffic fatalities altogether.

The campaign, “MemorialRoute,” includes a tribute via Google Map’s Ad Place feature to each of the 1,000 traffic accident victims who have died in Spain so far this year.

As the campaign notes, “There is no better tribute than ensuring that their story is never repeated.” See more about the campaign here.
