Wireless Communications Improves Efficiencies in Construction

According to InStat-MDR, wireless data is expected to be the largest and hottest technology implemented in the construction industry, and is seen by many as the next "big thing" to boost efficiencies and communications at the job site. Wireless data is being seen as a major breakthrough in E-Business applications and communications in the construction industry.

Wireless data services benefit many construction areas including enhancing efficiencies, promoting multi-stakeholder integration, and facilitating workflow planning and project management. Wireless voice services are also aiding in improving the construction industry by helping solve problems as they occur, anytime and anyplace.

And, web-based tools to aid in the design, building, and computer drawing industry such as AutoCAD or simply CAD are also being evaluated as a possible integration into mobile computers, PDAs, and "smart" phones.

Cellular companies are also providing two-way cellular/radio phones that allow for contractors, subcontractors, delivery personnel, and remote workers to communicate in rugged and more real-time conditions. Wireless devices and computers that are rugged, sturdy, and can be dropped on a job site are viewed as more in demand because of the general construction environment.

Some of the trends occurring in the construction industry:

  • Online project management via a company Intranet or Extranet that allows companies to send data more easily among employees, increasing collaboration and efficiency.
  • Exchange Web sites that bring contractors and suppliers together in a digital marketplace to allow for the buying and selling of building materials and services.
  • Real time collaboration over the Internet that provides a powerful tool for contractors, crews, suppliers, engineers and clients.
  • Mobile office access to behind-the-firewall corporate e-mail, calendar and scheduling information.
  • Real-time, two-way workforce communications and the ability to remotely track time-critical project data, such as labor hours and project costs.
  • Wireless Internet that provides access to project Extranets, Intranets and Web-based productivity tools, including fleet management solutions and dispatch tools.
