High-Def TV To Help Determine Next President, Swann Predicts

Phil Swann is having some fun this morning. Figuring that the widespread adaption of high-definition TV might affect the way voters see the 2008 presidential candidates, he offers his personal, tongue-in-cheek analysis of who's likely to be helped--or hurt-- by the technology's ability to take us up-close-and-personal with the pols. Likely to receive the biggest bump from high-def is North Carolina's John Edwards: "Like Mrs. Clinton, Edwards looks older in high-def; no one would mistake him for Kerry's son instead of his running mate. (This could be a plus for the youthful-looking Edwards who has been accused of lacking gravitas.) But Edwards' face is smooth and largely unlined and his blue eyes sparkle in high-def. HDTV should be a big advantage for the 2004 vice presidential candidate." Arizona's John McCain, on the other hand, will take a hit: "McCain has had surgery on the left side of his face to remove some cancerous growths caused by the sun. However, in high-def, the surgery makes McCain's left cheek seem puffed up, as if he's chewing tobacco. He looks like he's about to spit at anyone who would oppose campaign finance reform. It seems unfair to even suggest that McCain could be hurt by this. But this is a superficial nation and history shows that voters tend to favor the better looking."
