On the question of the effect of today's iPhone launch on the overall industry, Richard Williams was ready with an answer.

Having just delivered the pitch for the wonder of the 3G network, he focused on the early criticism of the sluggish speed of the 2G AT&T network on which the iPhone is running.

"You can have a great UI (user interface), but you need a powerful network to deliver the mobile experience."

He added, "Overall, it will be good for the industry."
