9 Radio Groups Join TargetSpot

radioInternet radio got a boost Monday as nine more radio groups joined TargetSpot, an ad sales network serving online radio broadcasters. The additions bring TargetSpot's portfolio of station partners to over 600, as the network continues to build its reach for advertisers.

The nine radio groups include Pamal Broadcasting, based in Albany, NY; Capitol Broadcasting, in Raleigh, NC; Riviera Broadcast Group, in Las Vegas and Phoenix; CD101, in Columbus, OH; RadioIO, a pioneering online radio service; MaxMedia in Montana; NorfolkNew Media Broadcasters in Virginia; CBM Broadcasting in Myrtle Beach, SC; and Mediaguide's Beyond Frequency Network, a playlist service based on college and specialty radio launching in the near future.

These groups join TargetSpot's previous partners, including CBS Radio and Entercom. The CBS deal also gives TargetSpot advertisers access to AOL's online radio service, which recently merged ad sales with CBS.

CBS Radio owns a minority stake in TargetSpot, which was founded in 2007 by venture capital groups.

The online radio space has seen a steady stream of deals as online-only and traditional radio broadcasters alike work to expand their reach, create new features for listeners, and enhance technical capabilities for advertisers. Triton Radio Networks bought Jones Media Group--including its online business--in late June, followed by Radio Companion, a company that creates Web applications and online tools for radio stations, earlier this month.

In November 2007, Triton Media Group picked up Excelsior Radio Networks and its two subsidiaries, Dial Global and MJI Interactive, which provides partner stations with Web content and software tools

In April of this year, Emmis Communications announced that it is launching a new company, Emmis Interactive, to help radio broadcasters and other publishers create and expand their Web operations. Previously, Emmis Interactive was an internal division responsible for developing Emmis' online business, including creating and revamping Web sites for its various radio stations.
