Wal-Mart Tests Mail-In Rx Concept

  • May 7, 2009
Looks like Wal-Mart Stores is out to revolutionize the retail prescription business again: The company says it has launched a pilot program in Michigan, offering a 90-day supply of generic drugs via mail-order for just $10, targeting customers who don't live near a Walmart store.

Wal-Mart, which sparked a copycat frenzy back in 2006, when it began offering a 30-day supply of generics in its stores for just $4, says delivery will be free, and cover 300 commonly prescribed medications. Consumers can enroll with a phone call, and never have to enter the store.

"This announcement signals Walmart's commitment to help consumers save money on prescriptions regardless of whether or not they live close to a Walmart pharmacy location," the company says in its release. "Our $10 mail delivery prescription pilot program is a reflection of Walmart's commitment to drive unnecessary costs out of the health care system so Americans can live healthier, better lives."--Sarah Mahoney
