The triple threat of high gasoline, low incentives and lower inventory because of the disaster in Japan is making May a pretty dismal month for car and truck sales, based in mid-month ascultation by J.D. Power and Associates.

Data from the firm's Power Information Network suggests that with gasoline prices near historic highs, sales are heading toward around 858,400 units -- which would mean, if extended out to the year with variations, a 9.6-million-unit year. The month's selling rate is higher than it was in May last year by about a million units, but way off from the yearly average of 10.7 million units.
