Chevrolet Gears Up For Nov. 3 Centennial

ChevroletNovember 3 is the official centennial of General Motors' Chevrolet division, but the party is starting early with a new program called "Centennial Experience." The digital program, at chevy100.com, encourages people to vote for their favorite Chevrolet vehicle of all time.

The site also enables consumers to tell their best Chevy stories, and run local Chevrolet birthday parties in their communities backed by Chevrolet and dealers.

Chris Perry, VP global marketing for the company, said in a release that Chevrolet has sold some 200 million cars and trucks worldwide over the past century.

The Web site offers up 16 Chevrolet vehicles that people can vote on as the best-ever, bookended by the 1912 Chevrolet Six and the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and ties to social media sites like Chevrolet's Facebook page. There is also a list of centennial activities in local communities on the brand's Facebook calendar. Chevy is also this year sponsoring the famed Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit on Aug. 20. The cruise, the largest one-day auto event in the world, is a parade of thousands of hot rods, vintage cars, race cars and just about anything on three or four wheels that brings in some 1.5 million people.

Efforts around the Dream Cruise include an annual UAW-GM Car Show happening this week at the automaker's Technical Center in Warren, Mich., where 20 classic Chevrolets owned by GM employees will get the nod to roll down Woodward Avenue during the Cruise.

Via a deal with Pandora, the Internet radio service has a dedicated Chevrolet station playing the Top 100 songs that mention the brand at pandora.com/chevy100.

The company has been doing centennial programs in other countries as well this year, such as Chevrolet Europe's June rally at Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, where Louis Chevrolet was born.
