Budweiser Bows New Campaign, Topped With Responsible-Drinking Blimp

Budweiser-Designate-A-Driver-ASummer is a time of concerts and festivals and beach-going, all of which carry the attendant risk of drinking and driving. To help people make the right decisions when imbibing, Budweiser is promoting responsible drinking with a new campaign that is hard to ignore, because the message is spelled out in the sky on the side of 130-foot-long blimp.

The responsible-drinking blimp, emblazoned with a slogan encouraging revelers to “Designate a Driver” is poised to embark on a 17-week tour of the U.S. It has 25 planned stops (or rather, hoverings) at major sporting events, festivals, concerts, and other outdoor celebrations where the blimp’s message is particularly relevant.

After launching at St. Louis on May 22-23, the blimp will visit cities including Houston, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Charleston, Virginia Beach, New York City, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Chicago June through September.

The Designate a Driver blimp campaign also includes a social media component. Consumers ages 21 and older can follow the blimp’s progress on Twitter with @budblimp, and blimp fans can post pictures of the airship using the hashtag #ddblimp.

Adults can also visit www.budblimp.com to take a pledge to drink responsibly and designate a driver, then share the pledge with friends on Facebook. People who take the pledge will be entered in a sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip to Budweiser’s “Made In America” music festival on August 31-September 1, including a blimp ride over the festival grounds at the stately pace of 35 miles per hour.

The summer months always bring out eye-catching aerial advertising campaigns. Currently, Universal Pictures is promoting "Despicable Me 2," scheduled for release on July 3, with an elaborate aerial advertising campaign in partnership with Van Wagner Communications’ Airship Group. The campaign, created in collaboration with Maxus and Kinetic Worldwide, centers on the “Despicablimp” -- a Van Wagner airship featuring original artwork depicting the movie’s Minion character.
