Ex-Clear Channel Outdoor CEO Joins JCDecaux

Paul J. Meyer, who previously served as president and CEO of Clear Channel Outdoor’s Americas Division, has joined international out-of-home advertising company JCDecaux as president of digital sign services, a newly created division of JCDecaux’s North American business.

The move puts Meyer high up in a company that used to be a direct competitor, a fact he acknowledged and credited as a source of valuable lessons: “Interestingly, my experience competing with JCDecaux in the European markets during the period I also ran Clear Channel Outdoor’s International Division shaped my view that digital billboards in the U.S. are most effective when sold in the types of networks that are the model for European street furniture.”

As head of CCO Americas, Meyer spearheaded the creation of an extensive digital billboard network covering 30 top U.S. markets. He also served on the board of directors of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America and the board of directors and executive committee of the Traffic Audit Bureau, which formulates measurement standards for the medium.

Among other responsibilities, JCDecaux Chairman and co-CEO Jean-Francois Decaux stated that Meyer will help the company leverage the new digital DOOH network the company is building along Chicago’s expressways in partnership with the city government.

Previously, Meyer stepped down as president of Clear Channel Outdoor and CEO of its Americas Division in December 2009, but stayed on as a consultant to the company through October 2012.

September has brought a wave of executive appointments in the outdoor industry. Earlier this month, Jeremy Male was named CEO of CBS Outdoor Americas, having previously served as CEO of JCDecaux for the United Kingdom, Northern Europe and Australia. Meanwhile, Zoom Media announced that Tom Link has been named senior executive vice president for sales and marketing.
