Nielsen Silences Audio Unit, Hundreds Of Former Arbitron Staffers Let Go Amid Massive Cuts

There are fewer voices left inside Nielsen Audio, the new radio audience measurement division created by the marketing and media research giant’s acquisition of Arbitron. More than 500 Nielsen staffers, mainly from Arbitron, are estimated to have been let go today as a result of the consolidation of the two organizations.

A Nielsen spokesperson declined to comment on the headcount affected by the cuts, but confirmed that the company began letting people go today.

"As part of the integration of Nielsen Audio, Nielsen is implementing changes across the company to enhance growth and to align our resources to meet and exceed client needs,” the company said in a prepared statement, adding: “These changes will improve productivity and innovation for the benefit of our organization, clients and shareholders."

One Nielsen observer questioned how those cuts would benefit the clients of Nielsen Audio, following the cuts of as many as 450 former Arbitron staffers -- noting that some operations, like network radio measurement service RADAR, now have “virtually no staff left.”
