CBS Begins 'Extant' This Summer With Amazon Deal

Hoping to repeat its summer ratings and financial success with “Under the Dome,” CBS will start up a new series from Steven Spielberg’s “Extant” this June --- which includes a major digital video deal with Amazon.

The series from Amblin Television, starring Halle Berry, will premiere on CBS in June. The Digital video service Amazon Prime Instant Video will air episodes four days after its first broadcast on CBS.

“Under The Dome," which performed at high levels in the summer of 2013, was also produced by Amblin Entertainment, which had a similar deal with Amazon. “Dome” averaged 15.06 million viewers for CBS, which the network says was the most-watched scripted summer series in over two decades.

“Extant” is about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that will ultimately change the course of human history.

“Our partnership with Amazon for ‘Under the Dome’ helped build a creative, financial and marketing model for event television in the summer,” stated Scott Koondel, chief corporate licensing officer. “We look forward to using the same model for ‘Extant’.”
