GPS Watch Lets You Keep Tabs On Your Kids

As the father of a six-month-old baby girl, I am only now beginning to grasp the vast vistas of anxiety that open out before you when you cross the threshold of parenthood. I had no idea people can actually live this way on a day-to-day basis without constantly resorting to wine and Valium, but I’m gradually acclimating myself, and eagerly adopting technology whenever it can help alleviate (or alternatively, enable) the state of constant hyper-vigilance.

In a few years, I am almost certainly going to be getting my kid a GPS watch that allows me to track her location, now that I know it’s a thing. One likely candidate is the hereO, which its makers claim is the smallest and most sophisticated cellular GPS watch for kids, and which is being unveiled at the CES in Las Vegas this week.

The hereO is designed for kids ages three and up, is water-resistant, and comes in a range of bright kid-friendly colors. The watch works in sync with a mobile app on smartphone or desktop, allowing parents  to access real-time location information and location history.

It also boasts a number of other useful features, including indoor location tracking via Wifi; safe-zone alerts, which tell parents when their kid arrives at designated safe zones like school or a friend’s house; a panic alert button that allows kids to send an emergency message to their parents (I’m hyperventilating just thinking about it); and a tamper alert that tells parents if anyone has tried to remove the watch or turn it off.

Of course, peace of mind doesn’t exactly come cheap. The watch costs $179, and you also have to shell out $4.95 for a monthly subscription after the first three months. But they know they’ve got you because: parenthood.

Having an elderly father and looking ahead for myself, I think more than children can use this.
