'Walking Dead' Walks Away With Twitter Audience

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” -- already getting top honors as the best-rated 18-49 viewer show on TV -- also has the top spot when it comes to the biggest average Twitter audience this season.

AMC’s big drama pulled in an average audience of 4.3 million coming from 480,000 average tweets for each episode between Sept. 1, 2014 and May 24, 2015, per Nielsen Social, which measured U.S. tweets three hours before and three hours after a TV airing.

“Walking Dead” was among the top 10 broadcast networks and cable network series shows that grabbed big results when it came to social media for TV series running more than five episodes this season.

ABC’s “The Bachelor” was next with an audience of 3.6 million and 156,000 average tweets. HBO and HBO Latino’s “Game of Thrones” had an audience of 2.9 million and 107,000 average tweets. FX’s “American Horror Story: Freak Show” was fourth at 2.8 million and 239,000 average tweets, while Fox’s “Empire” posted a 2.6 million average audience and 627,000 average tweets.

Others on the list: ABC’s “Scandal,” ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars,” NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” USA’s “WWE Monday Night Raw” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

Five cable shows and five broadcast shows made the top 10. Overall, analysts say the TV shows with the highest viewing still aren’t always the big audiences for Twitter -- partly because much social media activity is being produced by younger media users.

However, looking at individual TV events, the Super Bowl on February 1, 2015 on NBC ranked as the best single telecast of the year, with an audience of 16.1 million with 25.1 million overall tweets.

CBS’ “Grammys” was next at a 13.3 million average audience and 13.4 million overall tweets. After this came NBC’s “SNL’s 40th Anniversary Special” -- with a 9.1 million audience and 1.3 million tweets.
