Billboard Taps Spotify As Exclusive Streaming Partner

Music streaming service Spotify was tapped by Billboard magazine to be the brand’s exclusive streaming partner in 2016. The partnership will include several new chart playlists, the full catalog of Billboard’s 75 charts with a Spotify preview embedded in the site, as well as a new music editorial series.

Billboard’s charts are popularly used for popularity rankings. Spotify has also had a number of popularity charts on its site for a while now, based on the listening trends of its users. As a part of the partnership, Billboard will publish three new charts—Viral 50, which tracks the social and sharing activity of songs; the Velocity Chart, which tracks upwardly-mobile songs; and Spotify Rewind, which draws together songs from different decades that are experiencing a resurgence in popularity.

“For decades, Billboard has remained the world's most influential music brand because we've never stopped innovating and giving our audience expanded access to new content,” stated John Amato, co-president of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group. “Our partnership with Spotify will unite both brands and launch new features to better serve today’s growing digital audience.”

Spotify does a huge business on mobile devices, and its audience is primarily (72%) millennials, who listen to 1.3 billion tracks a week through the service. There are currently around 100 million active users on Spotify’s platform, the majority of whom use Spotify’s free ad-supported model (as opposed to paying for premium service).

The selection by Billboard is a nice win for Spotify as the streaming space heats up and more services start to get their platforms up to speed.
