DeWalt Debuts Newest Power Tool: Smartphone

Manufacturer of all things handy DeWalt announced this week that they were jumping into the smartphonebusiness with a durable new smartphone called the MD501.

The phone carries the traditional DeWalt aesthetic, but its features make it look more at home on a construction site.

The phone is fully resistant to dust and can withstand being submerged in two meters of water for 30 minutes. It can also be dropped from two meters onto concrete and is resistant to vibrations and chemical spills.

It can be used with gloves on, and can operate at temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius (-4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit).

Beyond the purely physical capabilities the MD501 can also support dual SIM cards, offers 4G LTE band service and wireless QI charging. It operates on Android 5.1 Lollipop, has a 13-megapixel camera, a 1.32 gigahertz processor with two gigabytes of RAM and a 5-inch 720 pixel display.

DeWalt doesn’t actually build the phone; it just licenses its brand to Global Mobile Communications, who does manufacture the device. The device itself will be available in the UK next month, and will be released in other countries afterwards.

Other construction companies like Cat have started to get phones built that can withstand “real-world” stresses in a much more effective way—though unless coffee counts as a chemical, the average consumer doesn’t deal with chemical spills on a regular basis.

The phones will probably also do well with the parents of young children.
