Facebook Taps Van Veen To Head Creative Strategy, Pushes Video Content

Facebook just hired Ricky Van Veen, co-founder of CollegeHumor.com, as head of global creative strategy.

“This essentially means that I’ll be working with all types of creators and organizations to figure out how best to use the biggest network in the world to better connect people with engaging and meaningful content,” Van Veen explains in a new post.

“In terms of Facebook’s opportunity to leverage great content (specifically video) to the right audiences, things are just getting started,” Van Veen added.

As Facebook continues to mature, engaging users with better video content is key to its longevity.

Among other related efforts, Facebook has been eager to re-position itself as a live-video platform. Indeed, it only began testing live video-streaming late last year, but is now planning to prominently place a live video tab right in its Messenger app.

To compete directly with Snapchat, Facebook is also reportedly developing a standalone camera app.

Industrywide, investments in original digital video programming have increased 114% since 2014, according to recent findings from IAB research.

Facebook’s gain is a loss for CollegeHumor parent company InterActiveCorp. Worse yet, the news comes just days after the departure of Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor.

Van Veen co-founded CollegeHumor back in 1999. IAC then acquired the comedy site in 2006.
