E.W. Scripps Q3: Higher Political, Flat Core Advertising

During the third-quarter period, E.W. Scripps TV stations posted political spending of $26.9 million in 2016 compared to $4.3 million in 2015. The company expects total 2016 political advertising to be $100 million.

Core same-station local TV advertising was flat at $77.9 million with national spot advertising, 2.2% higher to $35.5 million.

The company’s early morning Friday stock price was down 5.3% to $12.35. Retransmission revenue was up 46% to $53.1 million, with overall television group revenue 25% higher to $197 million

Digital revenue was up 45% to  $15.8 million. Excluding acquisitions of Midroll and Cracked, revenue improved 20%. Radio revenue was down 5% to $19.3 million.

Company-wide revenues increased 23% to $233 million, Net income from continuing operations was $12.5 million versus a net loss from continuing operations of $24.4 million in the third quarter 2015.
