'Godzilla x Kong' Surprises With $80M Opening

 “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” -- which featured huge, computer-generated supernatural monsters battling each other and knocking over buildings -- earned a massive $80 million in domestic box-office revenue, according to Comscore -- well above expectations.

It was the second-highest theatrical opening in 2024 --and the fifth-biggest Easter Weekend opening ever.

Internationally, the latest edition of monster franchise took in another $114 million, amassing a collective $194 million globally. 

Warner Bros. spent $19.3 million in national TV advertising -- coming from 5,600 airings resulting in 2.6 billion impressions, per EDO Ad EnGage -- with heavy airings on CBS, TNT, TBS, and truTV during the NCAA “March Madness” tournament.

All movie studios on Easter weekend combined pulled in a three-day total of $136.4 million in revenue helping close its three-month season-to-date box office to $1.65 billion down 6% versus 2023.

Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” now in its second week, took in $15.7 million. Warner Bros.' “Dune: Part Two” ( in its fifth week) scored $11.1 million, followed by Universal Pictures’ “Kung Fu Panda 4” (in its fourth week), with $10.2 million.

Year-to-date, movie studios spent a collective  $255.3 million in national TV ad revenues (from 42,360 airings) down 31% from $369.0 million (69,940 airings) in 2023, according to EDO Ad EnGage.
